I have no idea what exactly Ubuntu ships. But support for the GT520 hasn't yet appeared in an upstream kernel release. It's queued for 3.2, and the code is sitting in nouveau git. You may be able to build an updated nouveau driver against your current kernel by following the instructions[1] on the nouveau wiki.
Basically, despite what a casual browse around the internet will tell you, GF119 (which is what GT520 is) isn't quite the same as previous Fermi chips, huge chunks of it were redesigned. Ben.
