On one occasion I was able to kill xorg (?). The effect was that the session
was over but I could log in and start working - no reboot!
Can you try using ALT+print+k ? It took quite a while until the login screen
was available, maybe five minutes.
Anyhow that works *sometimes* and often it does not.
