I was there for the second show and met some friends coming out of the
first. They were terribly disappointed with the performance. Many ticket
holders came out urging us to sell our tickets, which wasn't an option at
the time. Here's the report I sent to my friends after the show.Well, for my
money, I got my money's worth. It certainly didn't suck at all. Now, at this
point, my
expectations were lessened, but I don't think they were that monstrous
having seen him on the awards show last year. All in all, he was
very solid for the first half hour, came in and out with the band for
next half hour and the band played another 30 minutes after that. We
heard a lot of great tunes including "If You Want me to Stay" and "Hot
Fun in the Summertime" and a smokin' version of "Sing a Simple Song". I
thought the band was very good and not nearly as confused as you had
mentioned. They watched Sly and picked it up when he dropped back. All
in all the show (which didn't start until 12 am) cooked all the way up
to 1:15 and the band looked like it wanted to stay on longer, though
Sly certainly didn't have the stamina. Doing a little internet research
this morning, I am listening to a live show from '68 at the Fillmore
East that lasted only 53 minutes. I'm also noting that Sly's shows back
in the day started notoriously late and he was generally late or didn't
show at all, so it seems we did see vintage Sly.

Lastly, though the price was high, I think it was proportionate to the
quality of the act in the size of the venue. Legitimately, he could have
easily filled the Beacon at $45 and that would have just sucked. I'd rather
pay twice as much to see him in a small club like B B King's. The crowd
really enjoyed it and despite the long wait for the show, everybody
generally walked out very happy.Moral of the story, if you do see Sly, go to
the second show.

Peace,
