[ns] Doubt in recv()

Dear All,
   
  Please tell me the significance of recv(). I thought recv will be 
automatically called when a node receives a packet. I tried printing out the 
contents of my out buffer using fprintfI(stdout,"[%s]",out). But it is not 
working. Can anybody tell me how can i do this???
   
  Please help me i need to know this to proceed with my project work...
