The shadowing model is a good start because it produces a lot of effects experienced in the real world. But it is only useful for a generelized environment, that means if you like to simulate randomly placed nodes. But if you need to simulate nodes in an actual environment (e.g. a floor in an office building) it is not so good. You can try the shadowing visibility model which gives limited support for obstacles. But you need to cross check / calibrate your simulation results with a real setup because it is not as accurate as a ray tracing like propagation model (which to my knowledge is only available in ns-2 using a commercial propagation calculation tool). If you need more information or want to share your experiences on this topic, you can ask my directly because our group is currently working on this topic. Daniel.
