The shadowing model is a good start because it produces a lot of effects 
experienced in the real world. But it is only useful for a generelized 
environment, that means if you like to simulate randomly placed nodes. 
But if you need to simulate nodes in an actual environment (e.g. a floor 
in an office building) it is not so good. You can try the shadowing 
visibility model which gives limited support for obstacles. But you need 
to cross check / calibrate your simulation results with a real setup 
because it is not as accurate as a ray tracing like propagation model 
(which to my knowledge is only available in ns-2 using a commercial 
propagation calculation tool).
