[ns] How to use the protocol independently which developed on NS

My dout is how to use the new protocol which was developed on NS-2 individually.
 
Example:
 
I the NS-2 tutorial there was a famous example of adding a new agent "PING".
How to use this with out NS.
 
And also explain me in brief the margin b/w code written for NS & code written 
for Protocol development.
