[ns] Recompilation of code if v change the backend code

Hello,
I'm working on enhancing the ieee 802.15.4(ZigBee) standard.
 If I change the back end code of ns2 do I need to recompile the code? if
yes can anyone explain how .....
please help i'm in critical stage.
