Thanks for the suggestion. I asked the location supervisor about it, he said that the unit was 'only placed on charge overnight' and his people had never really checked on the battery level otherwise. It's a good thing to be aware of at least.
And Symbol support got back to me, and all that they could suggest was upgrading the OEM version on the unit, which I've now done.
