< Can some one please tell me how to transpose a tune from C to G or
  D,

Very simple.
C to G: move all the notes up five or down four (c to g, d to a etc.) and
make the f in the new key fsharp so that it is only half a tone lower than g
(corresponding to the halftone between b and c in the old key).

C to D: move all the notes up one or down seven (c to d, d to e etc.) make
the f and c in the new key fsharp and csharp.
Csharp to d is half a tone, corresponding to b to c in the old key. D to
fsharp is a major third (four halftones, corresponding to c to e in the old
key).
