Hi List,
Just to set down my part in the wide-bore G chanter
story. I made my first wide-bore G chanter in 2000
carrying on from experimental work by Adrian and my
father Stan, and in fact based on the chanter Adrian
was playing at the time. Since those first prototypes
i have made twelve or so chanters. The design has
evolved a little over the years but i can now get
consistent results from the pattern in terms of tuning
and tone. Last year I widened the hole spacing further
by increasing the thickness of the chanter around the
top holes. This sounds wierd but feels and performs
absolutely fine and means i truly have F chanter hole
spacing on a G chanter. The chanters tend to be bright
but volume can be controlled to a large extent by the
reed used.
I don't intend this as some sort of advert, merely an
attempt to set straight some of the rumours/myths
surrounding the wide-bore G design.
Cheers
Andy
