I think you're messing some things together:

1. yes I can confirm there are difficulties when a user wants to select the 
whole filesystem (i.e. the root '/' directory)
2. I really doubt nssbackup created that folder '/root' - this folder is the 
home-directory of the admin (the root user) and is always present within a 
Linux filesystem.

In order to check if a backup was created you should inspect the backup
destination you've defined.

I'll investigate this further. Providing some information would help:
- how did you include your '/' root directory?
- was a backup done?
