AFAIK there are no concrete plans for supporting parallel compression.
However, since this is an open source project, feel free to volunteer!
It seems to me a minor amount of work, as far a coding goes, since the
needed tools (pbzip, pibz) are already available.

P.S., a CPU load of about 80% indicates that the bottleneck may still be
IO to your storage location, so a more efficient compression will not
give higher throughput...
