What is happening at Molineux?

Mick McCarthy

Going into the New Year, Wolves were sitting pretty at the top of the
Championship table, scoring goals and winning games. The feeling around the
Club and the Fans (well most!) was of Premiership Football next Season. What
the hell has happened since then?
Now I am usually an optimist, always looking to the positives or looking
through "Wolves Tinted Specs" if you will. I am now starting to think however
that a few fans on this board are right, Mick has lost it and the team do not
seem to know where the next win will come from.

Let's take the performance at Burnley; one word Pathetic. The team looked
totally inept, seemed to be lacking on confidence and generally, to me, didn't
seem interested. To put it mildly it looks a completely different team that was
playing well in the early part of the season. What is the reason for this? In
my opinion it is because Mick McCarthy is playing a few of his favoured
players, for example Michael Kightly, who, let's face is is completely out of
form. Why not give Kyel Reid a run out? Jarvis on the right, Reid on the left
(as I am not sure if Reid can play on the right!) Another player who looks like
he couldn't catch a cold is Wayne Hennessey. He looks like he either has no
confidence or that he just doesn't care. Maybe it is the case he will be in the
Premiership next season with Wolves or without so in his eyes where is the
insentive to try? I am not saying that this is the case, it could be and more
likely is the case that our goal keeping coach Pat Mountain is not up the to
job. Hopefully in the next couple of week Carl Ikeme will be back and will get
a run in the team.

Another problem is the defence. When was the last time we kept a clean sheet? I
cannot remember the last time we actually kept the ball out of our net
(hopefully someone will be able to advise on this.) If we are not keeping clean
sheets, this is putting a huge amount of pressure on the strikers to get a
minimum of 2-3 goals a game, in some cases just to get a point! (the Norwich
game springs to mind.) After spending £2.5 million on Christophe Berra even he
seems to be lacking in confidence, and from what I have seen he has no pace.
Coupled with that he should have scored against Burnely and maybe against
Coventry, which would have got us another 2 points in the push for promotion.
Should Neill Collins be given a run out? How much a kick in the gentlemans area
would that be to myself and other fans who have called for his head?

You might think I am worrying for nothing as we are still top, and even if
Reading and Birmingham win their games in hand we will be 2nd, although only on
goal difference from Birmingham. Hopefully we can get back to winning ways
against Cardiff, but seeing as they are in form, I honestly can't see this. I
hope I am wrong and we do still go up, but at the moment I cannot see it.

Onwards and Upwards (I hope!)
