Ok... maybe I am confused...

1) What if this computer doesn't have an internet domain name?
2) What if this computer doesn't even connect to the internet?
3) What if this company does have an internet domain like xyz.com, but they
have their web site hosted on a third party system. Why would you call your
2000 Server domain xyz.com as well???

I am new to 2000 server so maybe I am a little confused with your response
about naming it as a Valid Internet domain.

Can you respond further?

Thank you for your time.

You should have used a valid on the Internet, domain name for the first
domain in the forest as it can not be renamed with W2K. XP might allow for
this, or so I've heard. If you ever have to connect your network to the
Internet you probably are in for headaches. If your company is bought out,
you may have issues as well when the big boss wants the domain renamed and
you tell them it can't be done.

We are using ADForest.com as an empty root. Our domain of IBX.com will join
the forest rooted by ADForest.com. ADForest has nothing to do with our
company name, will not be connected to the Internet, yet it is a valid
domain name on the Internet just in case.

At one time there was an RFC for the .local extension which could have been
used instead of .com. .local was supposedly for networks that wont be
connected to the Internet. However, the RFC expired so the .local is not a
standard.

Hey Folks,

When installing WIN2k server as a PDC at some point it asks for the hosting
name or domain name... can't remember how it asked it... and it suggestes
using the fully qualified name like something.com. Well I went ahead and
put in ?.com where ? is the name of the company. Let's call it xyz.com. It
also asks if I need to keep it compatible with (I think pre2000) operating
systems. I say yes because we have Windows 98 and some Windows 95 units. I
have to call it something different so I call it xyzfirm . I gave the
computer the name xyz.

So now when I look at the computer name it is xyz.xyz.com

Everything appears to be working ok. The Windows 98 computer will use the
domain xyzfirm since it needs the compatible version.

Questions:

1) When installing a domain server could I have said the domain was xyz
(without the .com) or did I have to use xyz.com (with the .com) portion?
The main reason for this question is I realized the xyz.com we used is
actually a valid internet domain out there. With DNS setup on the Domain
server I can overrided that in my zone file, but I would have preferred to
not have matched with real domain names.

2) Could I rename it so the domain does not have the .com?? or would this
be a majore problem after the fact.

2) There are several Windows 2000 Professional computers that use to log
into a Novell server. The profile for those users are stored as local
profiles. So when I make these 2000 Professional computers part of the
domain will it go and create a new profile for these users?? And if it does
how do I prevent them from losing all of their settings that have been
previously saved in the local profiles.

Thanks in advance.
