Alright now that we've got all of that out of the way...

Greg,

This could very well become more work than what you intended. Due to
the nature of W2K, it's not like NT of old. If you intend on doing it
even remotely correct, you're going to have to install the server,
enable DDNS, DHCP, and the likes, then run the Active Directory install,
create the user accounts, join the workstations to the Global Controller
(W2K Server) and then log each user in, create the new profile, copy
most all of the old profile to the new profile (except NTUSE.DAT),
polish up a few profile related things like the internet connection, and
last but not least.... PRAY that it works tomorrow morning.

It may sound easy, but really I would say you are in waaaaay deep. My
condolences...

(I do understand the position you're in though, been there before)

Rocky,

If you weren't trying to be smart then my apologies.

I am well versed at planning. My coworkers often say I plan too much...
In this case I get a call for help this morning... I have one night to
do it in or they will have to pay a vendor to come in... so in this case
I have to say "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead".

Still no hard feelings from my end...

If you feel the need for the last word please respond and I'll let it
pass so this will drop.

Good day

ummmm whatever. If you feel inclined to rant on the list go ahead. I did
return the message previously, apologizing for posting the answer to the
wrong list. It wasn't meant to be sarcastic but even a small network
require more planning then going in and installing software and even you
know that Mr. Greg (I want to list your whole name for public disclosure
and coolness) Saunders

Rocky Stefano... it would have been sufficient for you to not waste your
time in replying if all you are trying to do is be smart.

I am helping out a friend who started setting up a new 2000 network to
replace their Novell network and got in over her head. I'm being a good
friend by trying to get it done for her tonight. We are simply talking
about One server and 4 workstations... not some enterpise wide
installation. I have not become versed at Windows 2000 Server yet and
therefore I had a few questions that I needed to quickly answer and then
I can do all the extra study after I get it done.

So if you have something useful, purposeful, and beneficial then please
respond as I would welcome the assistance.

By the way... If you recall your reply to one of my earlier posts I
could have gotten smart with you based on your response.

** Your Response **
<<Which is why Citrix doesn't recommend installing the product on a PDC
, <<simply as a member server.

I could have said "Rocky... What the heck are you talking about... I
didn't mention anything about Citrix. Is that all you can say in
response to my post? A bunch of gibberish"

But I didn't... I didn't even think about it... Instead I politely asked
if you were passing along some further information or did you think I
was talking about Citrix (when I wasn't).

The whole purpose of the mailing lists is to help folks out... that was
the only reason I posted earlier about "prepairing network connections"
(the one you responded to). I wasn't looking for help... I was just
letting folks know who may have not ran into it yet.

I'm sure I'll get flamed now <smile>.

No hard feelings... just hit me wrong.

Greg

This is all the planning you have done for a rollover you're doing
tonight?

There are several Windows 2000 Professional computers that use to exist
only on a a Novell server.

I am installing a Win 2000 Server and removing the Novell server.

The profile for those users are stored as local profiles. So when I
make
these 2000 Professional computers part of the new 2K domain will it go
and create a new profile for these users?? Like NT4 Workstations do on a
NT network?

And if it does how do I prevent them from losing all of their settings
that have been previously saved in the local profiles.

Sorry for so many quick questions... just have to get something done
tonight
and I am running out of time. Just started messing with the 2000
server
stuff.

Thanks
