No, that's not tied in to exchange.

That domain by default is the domain name for that err..domain. You can use
that to log into the network. If you have AD running somewhere, go into the
user properties for a user. In the box next to the @whatever.com, type in
the username for that user...say jdoe. Click OK and log out of the system.

Now, log in, but when at the username/password/domain box, type in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for the username, and the normal password. You'll notice
the domain box go grey. Click OK and presto, you're logged in.

I like it because you can set it to be the user's email address. Go into
Domains and Trusts (something like that...don't have it in front of
me)...when in there, right click on the very top level and click Properties.
You'll see the UPN options there. You can enter in anything you want there
and it will show up in that listbox where you first saw @whatever.com

So, basically you can have whatever you want for the domain name, but give
the users something pretty for when they log in. eg. Domain name is
west.us.domain.com but you don't want the user to type in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] every time but you also don't want them using the old
netbios domain name either. So define a UPN that's just domain.com...so they
login with [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Really nice because AD doesn't care where the user is...it'll take that
login, look at the GC, find the login server and log in the user.

David.
PS. Sorry for the long posts...I just feel like spilling out what's in my
head right now to make sure I actually learnt something the past couple
months.

Subject: RE: DNS Domain Name

Next question - I see in the active directory for user setup it shows the
user name @ DNS Domain name. What is this used for. Does this happen to
tie into Exchange in anyway, or is this just the dns domain the user is
falling into (which would mean that you can manage users for multiple
sites?)

Curious..
