This could be a problem with your DNS under the following conditions.
1. your internal DNS suffix is the same as your company name.
2. your internal dns is authoritative for your domain.
this will work because your workstation will query the dns server for
www.mycompany.com but since your dns server is authoritative for
mycompany.com it will not forward the lookup to your ISP. The server that is
hosting DNS is using your ISP for its DNS so it can find the address. Any
machine that uses your internal DNS will never get to it.
The short answer is to put in an A record in your internal DNS server for
www.mycompany.com that points to the ip address of your external website.

Hello, all.
We are creating our company's Web site, which will live at a hosting
company. The site is not yet active, but the hosting company has set up a
dummy page for us to get to, which we will replace with our own content when
ready. Our problem is that none of the workstations on our LAN can access
the dummy site via its URL at www.company.com, but they can by typing the
site's IP address in the browser.
All workstations point to the LAN's DNS server. This server, in turn, CAN
view our site when one types the URL in the browser. Our DNS server points
to our ISP's DNS server. Workstation IP addresses are assigned through
DHCP. Workstations also obtain DNS server addresses automatically. If I
point a workstation to the ISP's DNS server, it, too, can then access out
website via the URL.
We do not have this problem with accessing any other website, either
internal or external to our LAN. We're a W2K shop all around. What am I
missing here?
