"If we do the upgrade piecemeal I know we won't be able to use ADS until

Wrong, if you do your PDC, all of your network will be utilizing Active
Directory. You don't have to have all OS's 2000.
This isn't exactly a cake walk. Read about this procedure before you go
jumping into what you are planning. You will have a huge head ache if you
don't.

Essentially, you will have to upgrade your PDC from Winnt 4.0 to 2000, if
you want to retain permissions, accounts, passwords, etc. If you don't care
about that info, then you can do a clean install of 2000 and then do a
dcpromo. Good luck. READ BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO DO THIS.

Subject: Upgrading Network from WIN NT to WIN 2000?

Hi All,
OK, OK, so we're behind the times. I'm looking into upgrading our network
from WIN NT 4.0 to WIN 2K, sort of. We have many member servers that, for
the time being will remain WIN NT 4.0 as will the client PC's.

How do I go about implementing this upgrade. Or, more importantly, should
we even bother? Should we wait until we can do one massive network
upgrade to WIN 2K? Servers, clients, and all.

If we do the upgrade piecemeal I know we won't be able to use ADS until
everyone moves to WIN 2K. What are the implications of this? Will it
cause problems in the network until we upgrade everyone to WIN 2K and ADS?

TIA,
JKE
