Subject: Active Directory Site Replication
I have a client with a Windows 2000 active directory network. The
office network consists of two domain controllers and an Exchange
server. The Exchange server also is running RRAS in order to provide
VPN services to the employees when they are at home. The client would
like to have another domain controller located off-site.
The network environment at the office location is an sDSL connection to
the Internet @ 192k. The router has a static IP address. The router is
currently providing firewall and NAT service for the internal network.
The internal network uses private IP addresses (192.168.0.0) for the
servers and workstations.
The remote location has a cable modem and a SOHO firewall/router
providing NAT for the internal network (it does support VPN pass
through). This network utilizes private IP addresses (192.168.15.0).
The cable modem network provides only DHCP addresses for the clients.
My plan is to build the domain controller on the office network and then
move it to the remote location. I will the configure an additional site
within Active Directory Sites and Services assign it the subnet
192.168.15.0, and then move the new DC into that site. My question is
what is the best way to connect the two sites so that replication can
occurr? There is no point to point WAN connection between the sites.
Can I set up site replication using the VPN? If so, how can I set up
the VPN client in the remote location to start as a service (so no one
has to be logged onto the DC).
Thanks for your help.
