We had a big problem with MailSweeper making repeated connections to non
ESMTP servers and could not scan outgoing mail as a result. 4.2_5 fixed
this problem that we were supposedly the only ones seeing for the first six
months we had this product (Very long story). Other then that and the CPU
help we have not noticed any difference. They did change the manner they
process the rules, but it is well documented and did not effect us. We
actually refused to pay until they fixed this so for us it was a mandatory
thing.
We just ran the upgrade and it worked very well.
We do have dual 700 Xeon's in the box and run quite a few rules. On the
plus side because of the way they handle all of the threads it does take
great advantage of multiple CPU's on both versions.

Did you upgrade or do a full install? We are running 4.2_1 and have seen no
problems (except our anitvirus went nuts last night and put 2000 messages
into undetermined). We process about 300,000 emails between our two servers
and have not seen a spike yet. we did throw some beef at it (dual 1.0 ghz).
If you did upgrade, has any functionality changed that is worth the
endeavor?

Under _1 the SS service ran the CPU at 100% continuously. Under _5 it very
rarely gets above 50%.

We used Mail Essentials for a while. Look at your volume of traffic and
what you product requirements are going to be now and in the future. Mail
Essentials worked well at what it does. It does not have all the features
and it did not support our mail environment at the time we had to make a
decision. So make sure they support what ever product and version you are
using for mail.
We are pumping about 600,000 mails a week through dual servers and
MailSweeper. Their newest version is much more CPU friendly then the last
version. I am not sure that Mail Essentials could handle that volume.
On the other hand Mail Essentials is cheap enough it could be seen as throw
away solution to get you over a hump until you have more time to evaluate.
That is actually how we ended up using it.
If you do go with MailSweeper I would recommend you combine it with the
Sophos anti-virus solution. The only weak point is I do not like Sophos'
update functionality.

We are using MailSweeper from Content Technologies. Does all that and much
more. We not only do what you are asking for, but you can also scan for
words and phrases weighted so that a single instance will not block a mail
unless you want it to. We use it to block SPAM, Chain Letters and hoaxes as
well.
There is even a PORNSweeper component that allows you to search for too much
skin tone in a picture and filter for it. Not overly accurate, but still a
good start for keeping Porn out of your mail.
Downside is that you have to purchase a separate virus scanner that plugs
into MailSweeper. By far the most comprehensive package I have seen and
seems to be very reliable.
Tech support is a mixed bag. They do answer fast and try hard. They even
sent someone out to our site to look at our problem. But, we spent over a
year with a "crippled" install because we were told that we were the only
ones with a particular problem and then after they acknowledged the problem
it took another six months before they fixed it. On the plus side we did
use the product free for a year, even though we could only scan incoming
mail.
