Normally opening (or previewing) a message will not execute a virus. Opening
the attachment will activate a virus. However when the preview pane is
enabled and you view a HTML message, you could be infected by a virus. The
kak.worm virus is an example of this. In theory with the preview pane
enabled you can even be infected by the Nimda virus, however the virus is
not written in that way. The chance of being infected by using the preview
is slim, especially if you use a good virus scan and keep your system up to
date with the latest patches.
