Tried that no joy...

All the windows menus don't let me interact with it

ALT-255 nothing worked on that... trying to remove the folder via FTP (which
was how it was set up)

btw it's not my server that was hacked and someone set up anonymous FTP (so
i've upgraded myself from "lowly stupid sys admin" to "d'oh don't let users
set up their own servers sys admin"

Any more bright ideas because this is beginning to get really annonying...

has anyone ever performed a low level disk edit to rename a NTFS folder?
(just an idea, not sure whether the file model allows it!)

Yup ;-)

It is not the space character. This is the ASCII Character ALT-255.

nada

Drop to a Command Prompt and change to the directory which contains the
offending subdirectory and type:

DELTREE<space><alt>255<enter>

Or better yet, type

REN<space><ALT>255 offender

The directory will now be called "offender" and you can now browse its
contents using Windows Explorer or the Command Window.

The ALT-255 key combination brings up the MS-DOS extended character set
character which appears as a blank space, however it is not actually the
character inserted when you press the Space-Bar. Windows has never been
able to browse this directory ever since at least Windows 3.0, but
MS-DOS has, if you know how. We used this trick in high-school a lot.
