I am using the Active Directory Migration Tool to migrate users, the KEY
seems to be that you migrate the users SID along with the ID. The
following information came from our HP support Tech.

As per our conversation earlier today I'm outlining the steps for allowing
your migrated users to use the profile created in NT4. It is important to
remember that you can only configure profiles created from the NT4 domain
to
be used by both the AD domain and the NT4 domain. This will not work if you
try to use a profile created from logging into the AD domain and then
trying
to share it with the NT4 domain.

The basic principal behind this is when you migrate your users from the NT4
domain to the AD domain using the AD migration tool and choose the option
to
migrate the Sid history the new AD domain assigns the user a new sid but
also has a history of the old NT4 sid therefore allowing you to access
anything with both sids. The NT4 domain does not know the new sid therefore
will not recognize the ntuser.dat created in the new domain because it will
carry the new sid. Its important to remember that the sid history is there
only to access old objects with the old sid and that all security
principals
created from here on will contain only the new sid. Below are the steps
needed to follow:

1) Log on to the new AD domain using the workstation that houses the
profile
you wish to share.
2) Once you are logged on to the new domain it will create a new profile.
3) Go to start==>Run and type regedit.
4) In the registry editor navigate the tree to the left to the following
path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows NT\current
version\profile list\<sid>
5) You will see several sids each one defines a profile.
6) In this key you will find a value "profileImagePath" this point to the
location of the user profile.
7) You must identify which one is the NT4 profile and which is the new one.
8) Change the value of "profileImagePath" to point to the profile from the
NT4 domain.
7) Log off and log back onto the AD domain and it now use the NT4 profile.

Subject: Migrating Computers

The ADMT tool does a pretty good job of migrating workstations but the one
thing I am trying to figure out is how do you migrate 4000+ computers using
the ADMT tool when some are offsite some are at home etc. Trying to
coordinate that would be a nightmare. Obviously, I am going to need an
ADDITIONAL method to migrate some computers a manaul method of some sort.
Has anyone come up with a way to manually migrate a workstation while
preserving the users profiles etc? Any info is appreciated. Thanks...Chris
