MS is working on a product called MOM (MS Operations Manager, I believe).
I have seen copies in MSDN. These are based on NetIQ tools.
We also have a tool called Mercury Topaz. It is actually sold as a tool
for monitoring website by running simulated transactions against them, but
it also has functionality to grab performance monitor data from servers,
that he found by accident. We didn't need to install anything on the 2000
servers, we just needed ID/PW to authenticate. Data goes to common
repository (ours is SQl Server). Can also do unix, but I believe you need
to put a service there first. NT4 works too, but might need an extra
install step, can't remember.
Excuse typos..gotta run..I'm late.

MRTG is great and very powerful, has a bit of a learning curve but once you
learn it, you can monitor anything that has snmp. And I mean anything.
