To achieve this without sending an email the remote SMTP server must be able
to do a lookup against a user DB. this can be tested by telentting to port
25 of the server and manually doing a send email transaction  as per
RFC<whatever!> http://www.rfc-editor.org/ perhaps
ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2821.txt and would be an EHLO option section
3.4 may be of use
