You shouldn't have to do that, however, coz that's a pretty gross
solution.

Is it loading a bunch of services?  You can boot up the system with /SOS
in your boot.ini to display as much info as you can, but I'm not aware
of there being anyway of Windows actually telling you what it's doing
during bootup (unlike a Unix boot process, yay, *plug*) but it could be
loading heeeeeeeaps of services, or one particular service that is
stalling, taking ages to load or waiting for TTL on a dead network query
to expire.
