Hi,
we have recently tried to setup a VPN server for a client of ours on
a Windows 2000 machine. This machine was configured with a single network
card behind an Intel 8100 router connected to an ISDN internet connection.
The router was configured to forward the standard PPTP port to the LAN ip
address ofthe win2k machine. This did not work.
We later added a second network card to the machine, and gave the additional
network card its own public IP address with the router set to route all
traffic through to the public set of IP addresses on the servers.
We have thusfar been unable to get the VPN server to allow clients to
connect across the Interent, returning the error "No answer". The servers
with a public IP address are pingable from the internet and have full
connectivity to the internet.
The Windows 2000 server is a PDC on an NT4 network and is currently
operating normally with the NT4 domain. There are several NT4 BDC's on the
network.
The basic questions I have are
a) is it possible to have a VPN server with only a single network card
behind a router?
b) is it possible to have a VPN server behind a router at all?
I ask this because previously I have setup a VPN server at home using a
cable internet connection on one NIC and a LAN IP address on a secondary
NIC. This worked with almost no problems at all.
So does one NIC need to be a direct internet connection?
Thanks in advance for your help with this matter.
