Must it be Perl?

There are tons of free or low-cost solutions that can check services and/or
obtain database queries.

Subject: SQL Query Suggestion

I need to write a perl script that will contact a SQL Server box
(NT4, SQL7), and basically check to see if it is up and running.

I'm thinking I could send a query to some specific port and expect
a specific response. This would assure me that the machine is up,
and the SQL engine is running.

Can someone make a few suggestions ?

TIA
