I could solve the problem as per the instructions given in the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q263166 However, to be on the safer side, I made the registry changes only in a client connected to the DC (did NOT touch the DC registry keys), and gained access to the DC Group Policy snap-in (via MMC - add GP msc - select another computer - selected the DC).
