If you see the job as just a firefighter you are shortchanging yourself and
your employer severely. There are many folks out there who can put out
fires, there are fewer that can prevent fires. Smoky the bear doesn't work
here, so I have to do that job. ;') By doing the mentally and business
challenging, work up front you end up with systems that are stable,
supportable, and predictable. This means that the folks who's work brings
money into the company can do their job with fewer interruptions, therefore
you indirectly contribute to the bottom line instead of just being a cost.

Standardize existing hardware
Standardize existing hardware related processes
Standardize existing software
Standardize existing software related processes
Automate tasks
Automate more tasks
Document processes and procedures
Work with business users/units to ensure smooth integration of the latest
app that they have to have into your environment.
Establish top quality monitoring and management systems.
If you do this kind of stuff it may seem to be less visible right away, but
in the long run, it'll pay HUGE dividends.
