Yes you can have multiple root servers. And it is a very good idea to do
so. For one, you can transfer some of the FSMO roles to the other server.
For another, in case of failure, you have another root domain controller
live that can take over. You are thinking along the lines of NT4, with the
1 PDC. With 2000, as long as the server is a Domain Controller in the root
domain, it will contain all the info. You may even want to set up a desktop
class machine as the second domain controller if that is all you have.

Along these same lines, how would you protect yourself from this tradegy by
way of a second server that can also hold the root server data, can you have
2 root server? I am sure you enterprise level admins don't have one single
server at the head of your root domains? Thanks again.

I too have only 1 root server right now, but it is a reall server with full
HArdware RAID and redundancy at all levels, but I would feel even safer if I
had another server keeping copies of the root domain data.

You should at least back up your system state data (AD).
With 2000 you can back up to another disk or another server
using the built-in Winbackup.
Then, if it happens again, you're only replacing a HDD instead of a
domain.

Ok I need a little help with this.

I rebuilt the root domain lets call it Root.net
After the DNS installed I set it to allow automatic updates I then went in
and my child domain information has re-registered completely and all of my
stuff has started to work fine (from what I can tell)...
Now that I have convinced management of the need for REAL servers and they
are on order can I hold off till I get those servers to rebuild anything?

Sounds like the drive is toast . . . Especially if chkdsk -f can't fix the
error. Me thinkee you is gonna be in the office REAL late . . . Gonna have
to rebuild your entire domain structure. Again, badger mgmt for real
hardware - although you do have to take the blame for the backups, you can
at least point to this and say . . . "this wouldn't have happened if we had
had a real Server with H/W RAID . . ." - and there's no complete guarantee
that a restore would have worked, especially if there was data on the area
where the bad blocks were. But I think we can all be assured that you will
start doing backups from this point forward . . . :) - p.s. make sure to
backup the system state if you just use Ntbackup (at least it's free!).
