  If the LAN is "trusted", than that would be safe.  How much trust you
should put in your LAN is another issue entirely.  (Hint: In many cases, I
find the answer should be "none".)

  VNC listens on TCP port 5900+N, where "N" is the VNC display number,
starting at zero.  It also provides an HTTP server on TCP port 5800+N.  
Said HTTP server provides a Java applet that implements a VNC viewer.  You
can disable it completely in the WinVNC server settings.
