I wouldn't use it for any sort of troubleshooting or anything, but it is
interesting at a glance just out of curiosity to see how much data has
been downloaded/uploaded from your NIC.

Counting the number of packets is totally useless, because you can put
packets on the wire that are of varying size, and so it's really not
possible to calculate the amount of data put on the wire unless all the
packets sent/received are the same size.

Why isn't this configurable?  People have been asking this question for
a long long time!
