I can tell you that Windows 2000 and Windows XP have the registry key hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion","ProductNa me" Windows 2000 has the value "Microsoft Windows 2000" and XP has the value "Microsoft Windows XP". The only problem is Windows NT and Windows NT Server don't appear to have this key. I also can tell you that @INWIN can determine between a WIN9X OS and an NTish operating system. I guess the long way around is to determine if it's NTish then narrow it down a little more by checking the registry key.
