I had once a similar problem. The installation would hang during checking
the hardware.
It turned out that the BIOS had USB-Support enabled but the AT-Motherboard
didn't have any USB-Ports.

I did disable the USB-Support in the BIOS and the installation went
smoothless

Betreff: Windows 2000 Pro Install Failure

Problem installing Windows 2000 Professional

The Environment:
Machine: 400 MHz "PC clone" with 128 MB RAM running Windows NT 4.0
Workstation with SP6
Current OS is on a 2GByte partition with 780 MBytes free space
There are also two other partitions: 6GB with 4.5GB free and 4GB with 3.5 GB
free
Also a SCSI Zip Drive and TCP/IP on the cable-modem
Was first using a PS2 keyboard (the problem also occurred with a
brand-new Microsoft USB Internet Keyboard Pro)
Ran WINNT32.EXE /Checkupgradeonly first with NO reported errors or problems

The Problem:
During UPGRADE to Windows 2000 Pro, after the first reboot, the following
messages appear:
  - Setup is starting Windows 2000
  - Processing information file ...
  - Loading Keyboard Layout Library KBDUS.DLL
and then nothing happens after that - the machine just sits there

A search of Technet found article Q246187 concerning permissions on the
drive where the temp files are stored. I changed permissions to
Everyone\Full but the problem persists

I specified "upgrade" when asked, and then repeated the install attempt but
this time with a "clean install" and got exactly the same hangup, in the
same place.

I also checked the box to "specify the partition where windows will be
installed", planning to install to a totally different partition, but the
hang occurs before you get to choose which partition to install to, so it
seems to NOT be related to the OS presently installed !

Cheers
