IF you are on the same subnet as it sounds like you are even without your DNS or WINS servers it should broadcast to get name resolution of you have the clients setup to do so.
Are you assigning addresses with DHCP? Or course you can't control the weather in this scenario but you can control the point of failure in your scenario.
