Not sure of the answer, but there is one thing that always puzzles me...
Why do people call their workgroups, WORKGROUP?
In all my years of IT I have never seen a domain called DOMAIN, why
workgroup WORKGROUP? 

Maybe it is just me.

Idea,

What if you change the name of the workgroup on 2 computers? Will they see
each other then? Or do you get the same error?

XP Pro workstations and a W2K server in a remote workgroup -- after
applying SP1 and a couple of other recent hotfixes, the ability of the
XP machines to interoperate in a workgroup seems to have gone south.
The error is "The workgroup WORKGROUP is not available..."  I'm still
researching and testing, but wondering whether anyone might of run into
this...
