I too feel that there is something going on with this defult gateway, I'm
getting on the PPP Adapter DHCP enabled YES, IP 208.46.55.86, subnet mask
255.255.255.0 (all correct) except and mabye I'm wrong but the default
gateway is 208.46.55.86, and the DHCP server is 255.255.255.255, both the
primary and secondary wins servers are correct.
I'm confused by the last statement, the dial up user is getting the same
exact IP range and subnet mask as the server I'm accessing,... The default
gateway will serve no purpose... Meaning that it's not important???

If you can not ping the IP address, then your problem lies there. Look no
further until you can resolve that.

If you want to see the entire IP configuration do an IPCONFIG /ALL

This will show your DNS and WINS settings. If nothing shows up in those
settings then the client is not getting the IP's

DNS and WINS is not important to begin with. All they do is resolve host
name to IP.
Since you know the IP and you can not ping it by IP, then you have to
resolve that problem first. It could be a default gateway setting if the
dial up users are getting a different IP range and subnet mask then the
server you are trying to access. If the dial up users are getting the same
exact IP range and subnet mask as the server you are trying to access then
the default gateway will serve no purpose.

Users are getting the IP address from a different DHCP server local on our
network. Users can and do authenticate I cannot seem to ping the ip address
of that network share!!!!!!!!!! I'm notsure if the users are getting the
DNS and WINS addresses!!! How can I be absolutely sure

If if run the ipconfig from the dial up users all I see is the IP address
(correct), Subnet mask (correct) and weird enough I see the default gateway
is the same as the IP address (not correct).

This is a pretty good article.

You are probably already referring to something like this, but maybe this
will help.

I had problems like this in the beginning. You have to start first with the
basics.

Is the user getting an IP address from your scope?
Is the user getting the DNS and WINS addresses?
Can the user authenticate?
Can you ping by IP address?

This will help determine if they are even getting past the DHCP portion.

That is what I am referring.

Do you have any policies in place?

Can you ping the servers in question?

Does the remote connection get a domain authentication logon?

Are you using encryption?

You have to enable routing.

Subject: RRAS dial up problems with Network Shares not accessible

I am having an issue on a newly configured RRAS (Win2000) server. It allows
all the dial up users to authenticate however even after completely
configuring DHCP and WINS on it. I've checked the TCP/IP netbios helper
service and it's started, but what appears to be weird is that locally from
that machine I am able to view the entire network neighborhood. I take a
look into the RRAS service and look at the Interfaces and it appears all is
configured correctly. I've got the DHCP relay agent configured and cannot
seem to figure out exactly why the dial up users cannot get the mapped drive
to connect. ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS APPRECIATED!!!! Thanks...
