Paul, Thanks! We are using HTTP and will look into this. Devin L. Yes, you can force updates to the laptops from Trend's servers, but only if updates are done via HTTP. Apparently the instructions are included when you install the Remote Agent tool. (We didn't here, so that's as much as I know about it.) >From the OfficeScan Getting Started Guide: About the Remote Agent The Remote Agent tool allows OfficeScan clients in low-bandwidth remote offices to get updated pattern files and scan engine directly from the Trend Micro update server, instead of only from the OfficeScan server. This way, OfficeScan clients are sure to get program updates even if the deployment of new pattern files from the OfficeScan server is not possible due to bandwidth limitations. The following are some of the main features of the Remote Agent tool: * Proactively and periodically detects network connectivity that allows the OfficeScan client to automatically switch between mobile and normal modes, and vice versa. * Allows mobile clients to get updates from directly from the Trend Micro update server, instead of only from the parent OfficeScan server. * Assigns an OfficeScan client in a remote office to get updates from both the OfficeScan server at the corporate headquarters and the Trend Micro update server and shares these updates with other OfficeScan clients on the same LAN. This greatly reduces network traffic because the other OfficeScan clients will no longer have connect individually to the OfficeScan to get updated files. * Configurable to periodically verify its connection status with the OfficeScan server * Supports scheduled update * Records update results in a log * Easy installation and uninstallation * Pre-configurable settings by the OfficeScan administrator * Configurable update source * Supports manual update (Update Now) For more information, see the Remote Agent configuration guide. A shortcut to this document is automatically created in the programs menu when you install the tool. Note: The Remote Agent tool can only be installed to HTTP-based OfficeScan clients. Hope this helps. Question about laptops - we have a few loaner laptops that hardly ever connect to our LAN, but they do regularly dial up the net via Earthlink. OfficeScan corporate has a "mobile" mode - the laptops go into this mode when there is no LAN connection. Mobile mode seems to require our OfficeScan server to be on the internet to enable updates (grumble). I sure would like to get these things updated with virus sigs when they connect. There is probably a way to punch a hole through our firewall - but a better solution is to just connect to Trend's update servers. And I am not gonna put our update server on the internet, it stays behind the firewall. I suppose we could get 3 copies of NAV2003 but we loose central control. Is there a way to get these things to update from Trend when they are in mobile mode? Is there a better way? Trend has no newsgroups and I could not find any info on groups.google or here.
