If everyone is on a good pipe to the app server after the fact. And if
all the apps you install are msi or can be converted to msi, then GPO
works well. This leaves quite a bit out in the cold, especially if there
are any in-house apps. 

If the space is there, it is definitely worth doing the riprep images as
well, INMHO. Just be careful with OS updates, some overwrite core files
and the final image has to agree at the core with the original install
used for the OS.

Base images allow more autonomy and less storage.  Deploy apps using AD
and GPO's.  That works for me.
