...but, they likely won't fund a true solution until they've been hit 3 or 4
times, OR everyone else is paying for that level of security.

  Ahhh, that's a whole 'nother can of worms.  My personal feeling is that if
it's being used for company stuff, it should be owned, controlled, and
secured by the company's IT staff.  Anything else becomes a quagmire and
things can get ugly real quick.  As VPNs and other forms of remote access
over the Internet become more and more popular, I think we are going to see
this become a huge problem.  Suddenly, your security perimeter is pushed out
into everyone's home.  No managed OS, no anti-virus software, no security,
and 32 different spyware/adware/P2P/backdoor/trojan programs running.  The
very idea of your average home network being used for anything important
scares the living daylights out of me.  Of course, this is all way too
expensive, and nobody ever listens to IT, so I have to do set it up anyway,
and wait for the excrement to hit the air circulating device.  Then,
suddenly, management will wake up and ask me why I could allow all these
insecure practices to go on....
