I will differ quite a bit from the others here. 1. Your origonal issue is most likely a bad cable, wall jack, or an excessively long run. Full duplex requires wires that are normally not used. 2. Managed switch? The only reasons to get a managed switch in you environment are the need to control your ports/capibilities. Personally we have 200+ computers running through several HP4000M Switches. I have performance graphs for only one of the switches. (Backbone) The rest we just monitor for errors. However, I do not see a real need for a managed switch in your environment with the limited information you provided.
Honestly, your going to get a lot more mileage from a good cable tester. Although, it should be able to auto-negotiate. However, it "is" a Linksys and I'd be reluctant to buy one for home use.... As for what point I would recommend a managed switch, it's a tough call. With limited budgets, pros and cons must be addressed. But you as the consultant need to be able to back it up and provide details as to why they need certain features.
