X.500 is a standard for creating a directory of information. In general, it
is used to create directories of people and information about them, such as
email address, phone number, etc.

LDAP is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. In a nutshell, it's the
preferred method of accessing data stored within an X.500 directory.
