This again. Okay, here's how it will go: A bunch of people are going to say HP/Compaq rocks and Dell sells glorified whitebox PCs. (A sub-thread will spin off from this, about the HP/Compaq merger, and discussing the pros and cons of each product in their respective product lines.) A more or less equally sized bunch of people are going to say Dell rocks and Compaq sells overpriced, incompatible hassle-boxes. A smaller but still significant group will say they both rot and you should buy IBM, after all, they invented the PC. One guy will pipe up with a story about how he has a client who uses Gateway servers and loves 'em. Somebody else will advocate custom whitebox systems. All posters will put forth their own anecdotal stories favoring his or her point. These anecdotes will generally involve a call to technical support that was answered by a person with a thick accent, who made them go through umpteen different steps they had already tried, and then shipped out the wrong part. Others will counter with their own anecdotes (typically involving getting the part they need within a day or even hours). This process will continue, gradually diminishing, until everyone is so tired of the subject that the thread dies of self-induced starvation.
