The only time I've done that I've used the manufacturer's software to exceed the (I think it's 137 GB or so) limit, and it worked fine. It had no issues and created no load on the machine. I wouldn't have much issue with it.

So we have a Dell Precision 340 with a Intel(r) 850E chipset and buy a WD 250GB drive. The BIOS only recognizes 128GB. I updated the BIOS from A03 to A06 and now the BIOS sees 250GB. No matter what - W2K Server only sees 128GB and it is fully updated. I have tried this drive on the pri and sec eide controllers as master, slave and cable select. I have reloaded W2Kserver numerous times. I have loaded W2K server on a 20GB drive and then added the 250 GB. No joy. W2K server is stubborn and only wants to see 128GB even thought the BIOS sees 250GB. A little googling and it seems I need 48bit LBA. It also seems that I have the right chipset to add it http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/lba.htm. I remember in the days of old about drive overlay software and the 528MB barrier - Is this Intel software similar? I would rather not add drive overlay software - it seems that Promise and SIIG offer a inexpensive EIDE controller that has this (sounds familiar too). What do you think - use the Intel software or get a $50 48bit LBA capable controller? Thank you, Devin L.
