Vanessa,

If you know the name of the machine (if not, you can find this out from
the logon front screen - above of below the domain name (log on to:)),
then try pinging the dns name (machinename.domain_name) - if DNS is
running, you'll be able to determine if the machine is on the network,
as DNS will resolve the name to the IP, and then the ping happens.
