You said you can see the network but can you access the network.  Maybe if
you are running NetBEUI and it is showing the nodes but you have no access
to them.

You might have a switch and the port might be set up for spanning tree.

Have you network admin turn the ports to

portfast or enable portfast

Your environment might not need spanning tree (simple network) so then 
disable it on all switches.

Spanning tree turns the port off for 30 seconds and often with newer 
machines the login prompt comes just w/in that window.

try letting a machine sit at the login prompt for 2 minutes and then 
login.  see if that works.  if it does, chances are, it's spanning-tree
