Are you using named pipes or TCP/IP in the SQL client library? You can also use the SQL Server Network Utility to assign a static port.

Try setting the timeout to "0". This tells it to never timeout and see if you can connect then.

I have a problem in registering SQL through enterprise Manager, I always get "Timed out error" This server on the DMZ, with MS Proxy Server acting as the firewall.
I can connect through query analyzer but very slow.
I have increased login time out, it does not help.
Any ideals?
