We're using the Altiris product line for that - right now we're using the Inventory, Asset and Software Metering pieces.
One of the canned reports it does is to show all systems without a particular hotfix applied... Let's say it made the week Blaster came out a lot easier to handle. One tricky piece is getting it to install via Group Policy.
