I did not think about the file touches and the multi-engine would make

That's really interesting, as I've had exactly the opposite experience -
I've had exactly one issue with Trend in the last 5-6 years, and the few
times I've needed support from them they've been very helpful.

Antigen's architecture isn't well suited to file system scanning, for
the simple fact that its not very efficient. Remember, every file touch
results in a scan, in general, with file system AV. So the net effect
would be a significant slowing of the system were it to present the file
to multiple AV scanners at once.

Remember, regardless of perception, email isn't a real time medium, so
the incremental performance hit incurred by Antigen's architecture isn't
relative.
